Protected areas
Out of these 9 protected areas, at present only 6 are operational and they include Jigme Dorji National Park, Jigme Singye Wangchuck National Park, Royal Manas National Park, Thrimshingla National Park, Bomdeling Wildlife Sanctuary and Sakteng Wildlife Sanctuary
Jigme Singye Wangchuck National Park
Previously known as Black Mountain National Park, the park is located in central Bhutan and covers an area of 1730 square kilometers
Some of the wildlife species found in the park include red panda, golden langur which is endemic to Bhutan, common langur, sambar, musk deer, Himalayan black bear, tiger, leopard and some 449 species of birds
Royal Manas National Park
Situated in the south central part of Bhutan, Royal Manas National Park covers an area of 1023 square kilometers. The park covers 3 dzongkhags of Zhemgang, Sarpang and Samdrupjongkhar
The park includes a wide range of habitats from lowland tropical systems to the permanent ice fields harboring a diversity of flora and fauna
Thrumshingla National Park
Lying in the east central part of Bhutan, the park encompasses an area of 889 square kilometres and covers parts of Bumthang, Mongar, Lhuntshe and Zhemgang dzongkhags
The park is also known as the place where 22 species of rhododendrons are growing in their natural habitat and now protected as the Rhododendron Garden
Bomdeling Wildlife Sanctuary
Located in north east Bhutan, the Bomdeling Wildlife Sanctuary was established in 1995
Features rare animals such as blue sheep, snow leopards, red panda, musk deer and Himalayan black bear
Sakteng Wildlife Sanctuary
Lying in easternmost part of the country, it covers 650 square kilometres
Temperate forests of eastern blue pine and rhododendron
